Building – Beak and Johnston Relocation Project

“Our team has the know-how and experience to deliver complex projects over tight timeframes, within working factories. Beak and Johnston recognised the importance of engaging with Project Managers and Project Engineers who understand the complexities and pressures involved in such a project”

Beak and Johnston manufacture Pitango soups and broth, and they make their stocks in small batches. However with growing demand they needed to increase their batch quantities – hence the need for a larger factory with greater manufacturing space as well as staff amenities for the growing team. Therefore, TEG Projects were commissioned to undertake their factory relocation and expansion.

    Client Information

Beak and Johnston is a soups and broth food manufacturer who focuses on fresh whole food ingredients, and who stock the fresh food aisles of New Zealand and Australian supermarkets under the Pitango brand. They make their stocks in small batches in much the same way they did when they launched 15 years ago. However with growing demand they need to increase their batch quantities – hence the need for a larger factory with greater manufacturing space as well as staff amenities for the growing team. Therefore, TEG Projects were commissioned to undertake their factory relocation and expansion.

    Goal

To fast-track a factory relocation project for Beak and Johnston with minimal disruption to the daily operations. With growing demand not only did Beak and Johnston need a larger manufacturing space, but losing precious manufacturing time was not an option. This meant time frames were tight to deliver on the project.

    Why TEG Projects

TEG Projects have worked in the food manufacturing industry for nearly 20 years. Our team has the know-how and experience to deliver complex projects over tight timeframes, within working factories. Beak and Johnston recognised the importance of engaging with Project Managers and Project Engineers who understand the complexities and pressures involved in such a project.

    Solution

The solution to Beak and Johnston’s space problem and need for relocation was to establish a new 800m2 manufacturing area and development of the new site, complete with processing equipment and packing lines. A refrigeration system was required as well as a facility for chilled storage. The factory also required a trade waste and grease trap. As well as these considerations for the factory itself, staff amenities and offices were an important consideration. Overall the project was budgeted at $3.0m.

    Challenges

This project required the TEG Projects team to work within an extremely tight timeframe in order for there to be minimal disruption to daily operations.

    Results

Project successfully delivered a high standard facility, under the $3.0m budget and on time – an exceptional performance given the available time frame. The new 800m2 manufacturing area was established, complete with processing equipment and packing lines. The refrigeration system was installed as well as a trade waste and grease trap. Staff amenities and offices were delivered and have had an excellent impact on both operations and staff wellbeing.
